Thomas Waters has been with the University of Pittsburgh since 1989, and worked in the School of Medicine, Department of Neurobiology before joining the School of Pharmacy in 1999. Since then, he has served in a variety of roles including web master, director of communications and informatics, and currently as director of new media.
Waters has several degrees including a BS in Education and Agriculture from Ohio State University; an AD in Photography and Multimedia from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh; and graduate work in Religious Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. He is also a graduate of the MBA Essentials program of the Katz Business School of the University of Pittsburgh.
Waters professional interests revolve around the use of technology in higher education with a focus on strategic planning and adapting to disruptive technology and change.
Outside of the office, Waters is known as a blogger, podcaster, and social media innovator. His blog, thomascwaters.com was a recipient of the 2012 Beacons of Equality award, and receives over 36,000 page views per year. He is a frequent speaker at conferences and gatherings, focusing on the use of social media as a tool in issue advocacy as well as LGBTQIA Rights.
Waters is also very active in local community advocacy and sits on the Pittsburgh Citizen's Police Review Board as well as a number of advisory boards for local LGBTQ organizations.
