Community Leadership and Innovation in Practice Center

Our Community Pharmacy Network

Since 2012, each spring semester, our entire PittPharmacy P2 student class simulates a “Community Pharmacy Network” in Western Pennsylvania. We partner nearly 114 students within over 75 community pharmacies in our region. Students are responsible for working with the community pharmacy teams to identify patient and practice needs, then to conduct patient care and outreach in these pharmacies.

Patient Care Provided:

Our students with their pharmacist preceptors have cared for over 4,500 patients each year. Students work with their community pharmacists to ensure patients receive optimal medication-related care, provide health information, conduct health screenings, and conduct comprehensive and targeted medication reviews.

Advocacy:

Our students attend the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association Legislative Day each spring to advocate for patients and the profession. On average, students conduct over 80 legislative visits.

History of Success:

2013: “Million Hearts Campaign” National Award: National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Foundation
2014: “Good Government” School Award: Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association
2015: “Script Your Future” National Award: National Consumers League and American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy
2015: “Good Government” School Award: Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association

Students lead learning about the sites, services, and then providing to patients. In 2015, over 4500 patients were cared for collectively by the class. The students lead three public health initiatives, have applied for grants (Million Hearts Campaign – 2013), and received state and national recognition for their work (AACP Script Your Future National Award Winner – 2015, Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association Good Government Award – 2014, 2015, NACDS Foundation Million Hearts Award National Winner - 2013). All of our P2 students attend Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association Legislative Day each April. In 2015, 126 students attended after conducting 84 legislative visits.
