PGY-2 Ambulatory Care: UPMC St. Margaret

Description

The postgraduate year two (PGY2) Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency at UPMC St. Margaret is the second year of a two-year residency program in which the UPMC St. Margaret PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency continues to a PGY2 specialty residency in Ambulatory Care with special emphasis in Family Medicine. Continuity in learning environment and interdisciplinary relationships built in the first year allows for a rich and independent practice during the second year.
The UPMC St. Margaret Family Medicine Residency Program is affiliated with three outpatient family health centers (FHCs) that are located within 5-10 miles of the hospital. Residents in their PGY2 year establish a home-based independent practice at one of the three Outpatient FHCs. In addition to providing patient care at the three residency-affiliated Family Health Centers, PGY2 residents provide longitudinal patient care in a variety of different settings including hospital, skilled nursing facilities, and private practice physician offices. Training in managing the inpatient and outpatient care of our FHC patients allows the resident experience in managing the transitions of patient care. In the well-established collaborative care environment at UPMC St. Margaret, physicians, pharmacists, nurses, social workers, and behavior therapists work together to educate eager learners and provide excellent patient care.
Practice-based research experiences are numerous and afford high-quality outcomes with the expectation for presentation at a national meeting for the primary research project as well as peer-reviewed publication of other scholarly activities. The Faculty Development Fellowship Program at UPMC St. Margaret is a longitudinal curriculum in which family medicine physicians and pharmacy residents collaboratively learn teaching strategies, leadership, mentorship, and research design. In addition to our core faculty at St. Margaret, fellowship sessions are led by local experts from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh in communication and teaching design along with national figures in areas such as health-system advocacy and leadership. Pharmacy residents at UPMC St. Margaret also have numerous opportunities to give formal and informal presentations to health care professionals, precept PGY1 pharmacy residents and pharmacy students, and teach at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Pharmacy.

The postgraduate year two (PGY2) Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency at UPMC St. Margaret is the second year of a two-year residency program in which the UPMC St. Margaret PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency conditionally continues to PGY2 year through ASHP Resident Matching Program early commitment process.

All residents must be eligible for pharmacist licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Applications for  Pharmacist License and Intern Registration are available.

Application Process

Eligible candidates will have completed an ASHP accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency program and must submit the standard application requirements via PhORCAS by December 31st. An on-site interview is required.

This residency site agrees that no person at this site will solicit, accept, or use any ranking related information from any residency candidate.

Mission

The purpose of the postgraduate year two (PGY2) Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency with emphasis in family medicine at UPMC St. Margaret is to prepare the ambulatory care pharmacist specialist to be competitive in obtaining a position within an academic or private physician office, ambulatory clinic, or institutional-based practice focused on teaching or transitions of patient care, as well as adjunct or non-tenure clinical faculty position at a school of pharmacy or medicine. The resident will become proficient as direct patient care providers within interdisciplinary teams and with advanced teaching and practice-based research to prepare them for academic and scholarly work opportunities.
