The Department of Pharmacy and Therapeutics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy offers a 2-year PharmacoAnalytics fellowship with a focus in health economics and outcomes research. Pharmacoanalytic expertise is becoming an essential for leadership in contemporary pharmacy practice. This two-year fellowship will provide the opportunity for advanced outcome and economic analyses of real-world and clinical data to inform patient care.
This fellowship program is intended for a post graduate Doctor of Pharmacy motivated to advance their knowledge in informatics, technology and outcome data analytics through hands on experience and collaboration with industry and academic mentors. The learning experience includes the application of contemporary data analytic techniques to evaluate patient outcomes.
Fellows will:
- Perform systematic evaluations of population and patient-centered outcomes in addition to real-world analyses.
- Conduct and lead research with the objective of advancing the science and application of PharmacoAnalytics and educational scholarship.
- Participate in ongoing research, teaching, and clinical initiatives including implementation of big data/data analytics into practice and educational initiatives at the school.
- - Apply outcomes and cost effectiveness analyses to learning strategies and course improvements throughout existing as well as developing programs, curricula, and other learning strategies.
- Gain core learning experiences through mentored research and training in PharmacoAnalytics and clinical implementation science (75% effort) and advancing PharmacoAnalytics educational programs including, but not limited to, PharmD, graduate, and microcredential programs. (25% effort).
- Contribute to the scientific literature through scholarly activities including publications and presentations at scientific meetings.
- Assist in the writing of applications and scientific reports to funding organizations.
- Participate in the School of Pharmacy's didactic programs by working actively with students and other learners in developing their research projects. Occasionally, you may be asked to assist in the teaching of School’s Experiential Learning and Graduate courses.
- Be mentored by University of Pittsburgh faculty leaders within the School of Pharmacy while being an integral part of our PharmacoAnalytics strategy.
Coursework
Fellows have the option to enroll in a certificate or MS in PharmacoAnalytics or Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy Research. The MS in PharmacoAnalytics aims to have students gain expertise faster by obtaining skills mastery in data analytics and research using real-world databases. Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy Research (POPR) is a specialty track/program in Pharmaceutical Sciences. The POPR track will train students to investigate the impact and outcomes of pharmaceutical products, pharmacy services, and pharmaceutical policies across health care systems. The core mission of POPR is the advancement of knowledge about the safety and effectiveness of medicines, and pharmacy’s role in improving population health. POPR students most often focus on patient-centered outcomes such as access, safety, quality of care, costs, and patient-reported health.
Application
Applicants should possess a PharmD or other healthcare science degree with solid outcomes research experience or equivalent. Additionally, applicants should display:
- Strong project management skills to ensure structure and adherence to timelines
- Strong communication skills to work with a multidisciplinary team and communicate findings in formats appropriate for different audiences
- Strong analytical skills; ability to identify appropriate outcome metrics and measure, report outcome findings
- Critical assessment skills to evaluate the development of and execution strategies for clinical pathways
- Clinical writing skills; ability to develop and publish abstracts and articles based on project findings
- Problem solving skills; ability to creatively address gaps in care and practice patterns in ways to successfully meet goals
