Bonnie A Falcione

Bonnie Falcione earned her BS Pharm at Duquesne University in 1994. She worked as a hospital staff and consultant pharmacist at until 1999 when she accepted a position as clinical pharmacist. She returned to Duquesne, earning her PharmD degree in 2003 and then completed her Critical Care Residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. She then went on to combine her new Critical Care skills with her passion for Infectious Diseases. by completing the ID residency program at UPMC prior to joining the faculty as a specialist in Critical Care with an Appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy and Therapeutics in June 2005 and a secondary appointment in the Division of Infectious Diseases in the School of Medicine in 2006. In 2009 she completed her Certificate in Medical Education at the University of Pittsburgh Institute for Clinical Research and Education.

Dr. Falcione's primary clinical practice site is the Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit at the UPMC Presbyterian where she works with physicians, nurses and other professionals to optimize medication therapies for patients requiring specialized critical care. She also provides clinical service to the Medical Intensive Care Unit and the Antibiotic Management Program. Most recently she co-implemented a collaborative practice agreement based pharmacist monitoring program for patients receiving IV antibiotics upon hospital discharge (OPAT).

She also recently collaborated with the CDC, the PA Department of Health and the Graduate School of Public Health at PITT to bring the CDC Get Smart about Antibiotics program to the community via a unique student driven outreach program in Western PA. Her research area of interests are the prevention and optimal treatment of severe and drug resistant infections.

Dr. Falcione's teaching interests mirror her clinical practice and she employs using and studying innovations in the classroom, including the use of WIKI and simulation technology to engage students in case based learning. Dr. Falcione teaches in the Infectious Diseases course and the Critical Care Section in Advanced Pharmaceutical Care-2 in the School of Pharmacy. She also coordinates the Advanced ID elective which emphasizes Antibiotic Stewardship principles in an active learning environment. She precepts PharmD students for experiential learning as well as PGY1 Pharmacy Practice and PGY2 Specialty Residents in the residency program. She has been recognized for her clinical service, dedication to precepting students and residents, and for her innovations in teaching.
