Dr. McGivney is committed to advancing pharmacist-provided patient care in the community and developing students as leaders.
She serves as a founding member of the Pennsylvania Pharmacist Care Network (PPCN), a Community Pharmacy Enhanced Services Network (CPESN) of over 200 community pharmacies in Pennsylvania, where she supports the research and quality improvement initiatives. Dr. McGivney leads the ACT (Academia Community Transformation) Pharmacy Collaborative. The ACT Pharmacy Collaborative is a nationwide collaboration, housed nationally at the AACP Transformation Center, to support and facilitate community pharmacy practice transformation efforts. The Collaborative is comprised of representatives from 115 colleges/schools of pharmacy, CPESN community pharmacy leaders, the Community Pharmacy Foundation and representatives of national pharmacy associations including AACP, NCPA, ACCP and APhA. She currently serves on the American Pharmacists Association Board of Trustees as an elected Member-at-Large (2024-27).
Dr. McGivney has initiated and lead transformative community pharmacy training programs at Pitt and nationwide including the PittPharmacy Community Leadership and Innovation in Practice (CLIP) Center, serving as director for eight years, the University of Pittsburgh Community Residency serving as director for 15 years, graduating 37 Community Pharmacy Residents and 5 fellows in partnership with community pharmacy partner organizations, and the NACDS Foundation Faculty Scholars Program which engaged 31 community pharmacy faculty from 27 colleges of pharmacy nationally. Dr. McGivney led the University of Pittsburgh COVID-19 mass vaccination efforts serving as Deputy Director of the University of Pittsburgh COVID Medical Response Office (2021-23), and now serves as Executive Director of the Pitt Vaccination and Health Connection Hub.
Dr. McGivney brings her passion to the classroom and student organizations welcoming first year student pharmacists to the profession through orientation and the Emerging Professional course. She introduces first-year students to the history of pharmaceutical care and partners second-year students with community pharmacies in their experiential learning course. She also serves as the co-advisor for the APhA-ASP Pitt Student Chapter.
Dr. McGivney has been an invited speaker at over 100 state and national meetings. She has been honored as a Fellow by both the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the American Pharmacists Association. She has been recognized by the National Association of Chain Drug Stores as Community Faculty member of the year (2011), the American Pharmacists Association Community Residency Preceptor of the year (2012), the University of Pittsburgh Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award (2015), the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association Excellence in Innovation Award (2018), and the 2021 American Pharmacists Association Pinnacle Award, among other awards. She was selected as a University of Pittsburgh representative to the inaugural class of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Academic Leaders Network in 2018-19. Dr. McGivney currently serves on the inaugural Walgreens Dean’s Advisory Council (2024-26).
Dr. McGivney is the Associate Dean for Student Success and Professional Initiatives and Professor of Pharmacy and Therapeutics. She received her PharmD degree from the University of Pittsburgh and completed an Ambulatory Care Residency at UPMC Presbyterian/University of Pittsburgh. She joined the PittPharmacy faculty in 2003 after serving on the faculty of Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy and the UPMC St. Margaret Family Medicine Residency Program.
