PGY2: Psychiatry

The psychiatry resident will gain clinical experience through diverse practice settings in both longitudinal and block-style rotations. The resident will serve on multidisciplinary hospital committees and will develop and implement evidence-based drug-use initiatives.

This specialty residency position builds on UPMC's strong tradition of pharmacy resident training. The psychiatry resident will gain clinical experience through diverse practice settings in both longitudinal and block-style rotations. The resident will serve on multidisciplinary hospital committees and will develop and implement evidence-based drug-use initiatives. The resident will also provide appropriate responses to drug information requests, design patient-specific therapeutic regimens and monitoring plans, participate in journal clubs and present seminars.

Residents are mentored through the Resident Research Series to identify a practice-related research question, learn about study design, and execute and complete a residency project suitable for publication. For residents with an academic interest, the Teaching Mastery Series provides opportunities to learn various teaching methods and develop their skills as pharmacy educators and clinical preceptors. Flexibility is provided to meet the individual resident's goals and objectives.

Program objectives include:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency, confidence, and compassion in providing direct patient care to patients with psychiatric and neuropsychiatric disorders
  2. Demonstrate professionalism and effective communication skills in all components of pharmacy practice
  3. Optimize pharmacotherapy and safe medication practices
  4. Provide effective education to healthcare professionals
  5. Apply clinical and outcomes research concepts to professional practice

The mission of the PGY2 psychiatric pharmacy residency is to prepare pharmacists to be an expert in providing patient-centered psychiatric pharmacy care across an array of practice settings.

All residents must be eligible for pharmacist licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Applications for Pharmacist License and Intern Registration are available. Additionally, eligible candidates must have completed an ASHP-accredited PGY-1 pharmacy practice residency program.

Eligible candidates must have graduated from an accredited school of pharmacy and have completed or be on track to obtain successful completion of a PGY-1 pharmacy residency. The candidate must submit the standard application requirements via PhORCAS by December 31st. Standard requirements for an application include: demographics, academic history, transcript, curriculum vitae, letter of intent, extracurricular activities, and three standardized reference forms. Select candidates will be invited for an on-site interview and an on-site interview is required.
