PGY1: Pharmacy - UPMC Hamot

Site/Location

UPMC Hamot, Erie, PA

Program Purpose

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Mission

The UPMC Hamot PGY1 pharmacy practice residency aims to develop independent, confident, highly qualified clinical pharmacists. These pharmacists will serve our patients, communities, and one another in the UPMC Hamot tradition of quality, health, healing, and education.

What makes us unique?

UPMC Hamot is a 458-bed tertiary care facility, regional referral hub, Level II Trauma Center, and comprehensive stroke and cardiac center. There are active medical residency programs in emergency medicine, neurology, orthopedic surgery, and otolaryngology, allowing our PGY1 pharmacy practice residents to interact and collaborate with other learners daily.

Program Overview

The PGY1 pharmacy residency at UPMC Hamot provides motivated individuals the opportunity to build upon their Doctor of Pharmacy education and enhance their clinical pharmacy skills in a multidisciplinary environment. With Hamot being the regional referral hub and Level II Trauma Center in Erie, residents can work with high acuity patients in a variety of settings. Our residents will become experts in clinical pharmacy practice, engage in teaching opportunities, and undergo continuous professional development, demonstrating an ongoing commitment to the profession.  Upon satisfying all program requirements, our residents will be awarded a certificate signifying their successful completion of the pharmacy residency, marking them as highly qualified clinical pharmacists, making them eligible to pursue board certification, postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training, or clinical pharmacist job opportunities.
