Readiness Assessments (RA)
Learners will complete a comprehensive knowledge-based assessment prior to entry into clinical rotations. The format is a 100 multiple-choice examination format. The therapeutic domains covered will reflect several of the required core clinical rotations of the Program.
Intermittent Clinical Examinations (ICE)
There will be one intermittent clinical examination (ICE) conducted once per rotation throughout the program that consists of simulation-based or clinical-based assessments. Each ICE will be no more than 30 minutes in length per Scholar and administered by a designated rotation preceptor. Each Scholar will be assessed on a standardized evaluation rubric that assesses the Scholar’s skills on patient interaction, data extraction and interpretation, physical assessment, development of a therapy and monitoring plan, communication, documentation, and confidence. Both the overall score on each ICE (and the relative change on the simulator-based ICE, if applicable) will be included as part of the Scholar’s overall assessment.
Rotation Evaluations (RE)
Learners will be evaluated on activities that are designed to assess the predefined goals and objectives for each rotation. Learners will also be asked for any specific individual goals for the Program and rotation. The Program co-directors will meet with Scholars on a quarterly basis to evaluate overall progress on rotations and progression toward achievement of Program-specific goals and objectives.
Rotation-Based Assignments and Other Requirements
Journal Review
The learner will review the most recently published two issues of the assigned journal to identify clinically relevant papers. Generally, each issue includes 2 clinically relevant papers that are worthy of review (4 total).
Journal Club
The learner will select a clinical trial from a recent peer-reviewed journal appearing within the past 6 months. The paper should be relevant to clinical practice. This is an interactive session. The learner will present each major section of the requirements and discussion will freely occur amongst the participants. The learner is to maintain order in the conversation and manage the time available in the session so as not to exceed 50 minutes.
Case Conference
This is a formal learner-run presentation, utilizing technology as appropriate. It is to be 30 minutes in length with 10 minutes for question and answer and 10 minutes for discussion (total 50 minutes).
Research Project
Completion of the research project is designed to teach the Scholar about basic pharmacy practice research and to facilitate development of a feasible and clinically relevant project. Pharmacy practice research may include: evaluation of a new or existing pharmacy service, retrospective or prospective clinical studies, pharmacokinetic or pharmacodynamic studies, or outcomes studies. The Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program provides a structure to facilitate collaboration among Scholars and preceptors on research endeavors over the course of the Program. The Scholar will ultimately be responsible for committing sufficient time and effort to complete the project in a scholarly and timely manner.
