Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP)

The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy is the national professional association of pharmacists and other healthcare practitioners who serve society by the application of sound medication management principles and strategies to improve healthcare for all.

The Academy’s 5,700 members develop and provide a diversified range of clinical, educational, and business management services and strategies on behalf of the more than 200 million Americans covered by a managed care pharmacy benefit.

On the chapter level, we serve as an outlet for those students who are interested in a career in managed care pharmacy.  Meetings will be held roughly once a month and will focus on a topic in managed care.  Past speakers have come from Highmark Health, UPMC Health Plan, Walgreen’s Specialty Pharmacy, CVS Caremark, Accredo and Gateway Health. Additionally, the University of Pittsburgh AMCP chapter is the only school that hosts the North East webinar series. The webinars focus on hot topics in the managed care industry, and attendants include health plans, PBMs and manufacturers. The webinar events are quarterly, and are a great way to stay up to date on recent trends and topics.

Our annual Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Competition will be held during the Spring 2023 semester. The P&T competition is our largest chapter event. Students work in teams of 4 and analyze a new drug entering the market. The ultimate goal is to provide evidence to a committee of judges in order to support or decline the addition of the drug to a mock formulary. Chapter winners will submit their materials and may qualify to compete on the national level at the AMCP annual meeting.
